HYTHE AQUA SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING
Synchronised swimming is a growing sport in this country with the number of swimmers and clubs involved increasing nationally. Synchro is also now accepted internationally as a spectator sport, being one of the first events to sell out at the Olympic games.

Competitive synchro swimmers must be extremely fit, and completely at home in the water. When tested and compared with other Olympic athletes the results showed that synchro swimmers ranked second only to long distance runners in aerobic capacity, and to gymnasts in flexibility. They must be strong yet graceful, interested in music sufficiently to be able to choose and interpret pieces of routines, and have stamina and determination.

In order to achieve the standard needed for competition, swimmers must train with speed swimmers in distance work. Sessions are devoted to working on 'figures' - the set body positions and transition movements which form the basis of synchro.

In addition, hours in training are spent working on routines. Swimmers work with partners for duet routines or in teams of between 4 and 8 swimmers, perfecting movements, developing the choreography of the routines etc. Landwork sessions include working on flexibility, strength and weight training, also creating, walking through and learning routines, listening to music and so on.

Hythe Aqua Synchro has ached National, Southern Region and County Champions and has had swimmers selected for GB Trials. Hythe Aqua Synchro swimmers have also achieved medals at National Schools competitions.

Hythe Aqua main Synchro training takes place at Hythe Pool on Saturday evenings commencing at 5.00pm and at Folkestone Sports Centre on Sundays at 6.00pm. You must be a competent swimmer to take part in Synchro training, if not visit out learn to swim page and register for lessons.

Hythe Synchro Aquafun Success
There was a tremendous response to Hythe Synchro's invitation for young swimmers to attend their free taster session at Hythe pool on the 1st March. Participating swimmers were then invited to sign up for the 9 week Aquafun course and demand was so high that Head Coach, Natalie Goodson, made the unprecedented decision to run 2 courses back-to-back.

Impressed with Hythe's work to promote the sport, Kent Swimming Development Officer Emily Vigors visited the club during a training session and subsequently secured much needed funding to enable the Synchro Section of Hythe Aqua to pursue its development aims.

Picture shows  just some of the eager young swimmers who attended the taster session in March.

The Aquafun courses are now under way with 24 new swimmers taking part, who are all enjoying the challenge of learning the new and very different skills that Synchro has to offer. The course has been designed to provide an introduction to the basic skills of Synchro, within a fun environment and is ideal for those children who want to try something different in the water. The ultimate aim is to attract younger swimmers into the minority sport of Synchro and increase participation in this demanding but enjoyable aquatic discipline.
