The 2010 Sea Swim Championships were delayed this year, being cancelled twice, once because of jellyfish and the second time due to atrocious weather conditions. Tuesday September 21st was the last Club Night chance to complete the championships swims, before the early evenings made sea swimming unsafe.
Local Fisherman Barry Wonfor set out the race buoys and one of the club coaches Pete Saunders organised a number of safety canoes to support the event. As club members arrived on the beach at 6.00pm they were greeted by totally calm seas and a beautifully sunny evening, that produced ideal racing conditions. The calm weather enabled the course to be set out over a much longer race distance than normal which also promoted some really good races.
12yrs & Under
The 12yrs and Under race was the first event over the shorter course with Grace Walker winning gold, closely followed by Emma Levitt in silver position. The boys race was won by Tommy Evans, with Luke Archer in second place and Thomas Fox in third place. Eight year old Jack Nash the youngest competitor completed the course and finished in 6th place.
13/14yrs
In the 13/14yrs race Lizzy Nash took gold, followed by Jess Saunders in silver position and Katie Levitt in the bronze medal position. James Hulbert won the boys title with Sam Hindess taking silver.
15yrs +
Hayley Newman won gold in the girls race, with Hannah Bacon taking silver and Lilly McLaughlin taking bronze. Ginny Fell was the first Master swimmer home. In the boys race Daniel Burch battled with Ben Walker to take the gold medal with Ben taking the silver medal, closely followed by Charlie Smissen taking the bronze medal. Jim Burch was the first Masters swimmer, followed by David Evans in second place.
Well done to everyone that participated. A big thank you to Pete Saunders and his friends for providing safety canoe cover and also thanks to Barry Wonfor for laying out the course with marker buoys.
