Hythe Aqua Awards Evening 2008
A packed New Beach holiday Camp Ballroom hosted over 500 Club Members and their families last Friday night for the annual awards evening. The Club Chairman Jim Parris hosted the awards evening and acknowledged the many achievements of the various disciplines during 2008. He also welcomed the special guests:

Councllor Peter Lake – Chairman of Kent County Council and chair of Kent Volunteers
Councillor Ewart James the Right worshipful Town Mayor of Hythe
Councillor Carole Waters, Cabinet Member for Sport and Culture at Shepway District Council
John Palmer son of Past President Tom Palmer

The awards commenced with Councillor Peter Lake the Chairman of Kent County Council presenting a volunteering award to the Club for its work serving the community.  This was followed by the presentation of the 8yrs and under awards, where Katie Marsh, Sophie Freeman and Maggie Baxter took the trophies as champions. The boys events were won by Luke Archer who was champion in all strokes.

The 9/10yrs age group winners were Charles Watson and Tommy Evans with the girls champions being Ellie Burch, Gemma Archer and Grace Walker. The 11/12yrs age group were won by Sophie Newington who took the honours in all strokes and James Hulbert, Sam Hindess and Folarin Ogunsola  were the champions in the boys events.


The 13/14yrs champions were; Shanelle Fakley and Zara Brazier, with the boys events being won by Charlie Smissen, Josh Hill Ben Walker and Daniel Burch. In the 15/16yrs age group the honours were shared by Hayley Newman, Robyn Wakelin and Shakira Platts for the girls with the boys events being won by Eddie Barnes and Matthew Farrow.

Jenny Newman and Robyn Wakelin  were the champions in the Open 100m events, with the boys Open 100m events being won by Matthew Farrow, Scott Holder Oliver Bray and Tom Burridge.  The Annual Sea Swim Championships were hotly contested this year and the champions were 12 yrs and under Sophie Newington and Luke Riley, 13/4yrs winners were Lilly Mclaughlin and Daniel Burch and the 15yrs+ age group winners were Jenny Newman Scott Holder.

The Synchronised Swimming Section award winners for endeavour  were Maia Daw, Hannah Cox, Jodie Cowie and Hayley Newman.  Contribution to the Club Award was made to Lisa Neman for her hard work as a synchro coach and the performer of the year award went to Amy Campbell.

The Masters Section award winners were; Maureen Fakley, Pat Ling, Diana Burke, Pat Parris, Debbie Burton, Giny Fell, Anne Gunn, Donna Wickens, Linda Davies, Lois Williams, Mel Parris  and Kathryn Hoyland. The male Masters winners were Ernie Butler, David Staveley Chris Fakley, Graham Ling, David Evans, Jim Parris, Adrian Davies, Robert Hindess, Matthew Baxter, Alastair Ling, Jim Burch and Nicholas Davies.

The Junior Water Polo award winners were Kim Couchman Sawyer, Esther Evans, L uke Riley, and Liam Knox. The special awards were won by; Jenny Newman who was top points scorer at East Kent and Kent Championships, Oliver Bray highest male  points scorer at East Kent Championships.  Charlie Smissen took the most improved senior squad swimmer award and Grace Walker and James Hulbert won the Junior Squad Shields. Junior Squad endeavours were won by Alice Carter, Freya Coughlin,  Henry Baxter, Jessica Newall, Kezia Greenwood and Natalie Wyborn. With Teaching Group endeavours being presented to George Budd, Isabel Adams, Amanda Cufley, Jack Chislett and Emma Parsons.

The presentations ended with a celebration of volunteering at Hythe Aqua,  by recognising the work of the Swimming Team Managers Kim Walker and Paul Hancock and the work of the Club Treasurer Diana Burke. David Evans also received an award for his work associated with a major swimming exchange earlier in the year and the fantastic achievement of Greg Wood who swam the channel in early September was also recognised.

The awards ere followed by a successful talent competition raising funs for Children in Need and a family disco until the early hours.
